Five foods that help slow ageing

Ageing is something that all of us have to go through, but there are also ways you can help to slow the natural phenomenon. One of these ways is through the food we eat, which can have a massive impact on our lives. The Mediterranean diet is said to be one that slows brain ageing, but we understand that it isn’t for everyone. So here we have taken a look at five everyday foods which can do wonders to slow the ageing process here.

Broccoli

We start the list with broccoli, a superfood packed full of nutrients. Of course, it isn’t to everyone’s liking, but it is immensely good for you! As well as being an excellent source of Vitamin C and fibre, there is also a chemical called sulforaphane, which activates a number of antioxidant enzymes and genes in the cells. These help prevent free radicals from damaging your cells.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt is an excellent source of both calcium and protein, which protectsour bones and muscles from deteriorating. It also provides the body with billions of good bacteria, which are housed in our stomachs. These bacteria help to break down our food, and get rid of any harmful toxins in the body. For best results, it is recommended that yoghurt is eaten at room temperature.

Olive oil

Olive oil provides the body with health fats, such as omega 3 and monounsaturated fatty acids. It is also an excellent source of polyphenols, which are strong antioxidants. These are needed in the body to balance out the free radicals, which can be damaging to the body. Be warned, however, as cooking in olive oil damages the structure of it, and converts the good fats into harmful, saturated fats.

Red wine

We have arguably saved the best two for last, starting with red wine! When taken in moderation, it can be a great anti-ageing drink, thanks to the compound contained within called resveratrol, which contributes to a lot of health benefits. White wine does not contain as much resveratrol as red wine, so is therefore not as good for the body. Red wine also contains nutrients and antioxidants which protect arteries and the lining of blood vessels, which can help to prevent heart disease. Males can have two glasses of wine per week, with females able to have one a week in order to get the benefits.

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate that has a high cocoa content can be beneficial to your health, thanks to the minerals it contains. Copper, iron, potassium and zinc are amongst the minerals you will find contained within dark chocolate, along with antioxidants. Cocoa beans contain a higher antioxidant capacity than any other food, and the high concentration of antioxidant flavanols found in chocolate can help to reduce the inflammation of the skin caused by exposure to UV light.
